Good advise when looking for somewhere to live in Lund
  1. Download our checklist for finding somewhere to live in Lund:
    Checklist for housing 2009
  2. Register for housing at AF Bostäder’s website (www.afb.se). AFB is the largest student housing provider in Lund with almost 6000 flats. AFB prioritizes new students; visit their homepage for information about how to apply for new student status. If you are pregnant or have children you can apply for special priority.
  3. If you are an exchange student or an international master student you can apply for housing through the International Housing Office (IHO). IHO manages a limited number of rooms and flats in Lund. Due to high demand, they are unable to provide all international students with accommodation. Visit their website (www.lu.se) for more information.
  4. All Nations give priority to new students – contact each Nation to learn more about their specific requirements. Apart from new student priority, all nations prioritize students who are active or show a strong interest in being active at their Nation.
  5. Contact all the independent student housing providers and private landlords in and around Lund. A complete list can be found on our website. Many of the private landlords don’t have a housing queue. You should therefore visit them in person and try to make a good impression. Also, be persistent and don’t take no for an answer!
  6. Visit www.bopoolen.nu and other websites with housing ads as often as possible to check for available housing. When you contact the landlords you should make sure that you are as inviting as possible. Send pictures etc. to make yourself stand out in the crowd. Experience shows that personal contact is very important.
  7. Place your own ad on www.bopoolen.nu and other websites with housing ads. Make sure that you write a little about yourself and what you are looking for. Someone who puts a lot of effort into their ad is much more likely to be chosen than someone who doesn’t.
  8. Print personal ads and put them on notice boards in supermarkets, student dormitories, churches, libraries and other frequently visited spots. This works a lot better than most people think. You can print your ads at the university library, an internet café or any print shop. Don’t forget to mark your ad with the date you put it up.
  9. Place an ad in the local newspaper (Sydsvenska Dagbladet, Skånska Dagbladet or Metro) where you tell the world (or at least Skåne) that you are looking for housing.
  10. Contact everyone you know (and we mean everyone…) and tell them that you are looking for housing in Lund. More often than you think there is someone who knows someone that knows someone who has a spare room in Lund.
  11. Don't limit yourself to Lund. There are a number of towns and cities close to Lund from which you can easily commute. Look closer at Malmö, Landskrona, Eslöv, Hörby, Kävlinge, Staffanstorp, Dalby, Södra Sandby and Helsingborg. Links to housing in these towns can be found on our website.
  12. Don’t be picky. You can always trade your way up later, but you might have to wait for your dream apartment for some time. This does not mean that you should accept any housing standard. You can always demand that your living standard should meet all legal requirements for housing.
  13. If you have an apartment or perhaps a room in your parents’ house in another city, in Sweden or abroad, chances are that a student from Lund is going to precisely that city. A trade is therefore a very realistic option. Make it widely known in Lund and in the city where you have housing that you would like to trade. Many people forget this option even though it has a lot of potential. The international office is a great place to put up ads of this kind.
  14. If all options above fail you can stay at a youth hostel while you keep looking for housing. For a list of youth hostels in Lund and its surroundings check out the links section of bopoolen.nu. If you are an international student the International Housing Office (IHO) offer a limited amount of vouchers for the Train hostel and Sparta guesthouse. Contact them for more information.
  15. Persistence pays off although searching for housing can be very demanding. We therefore encourage you to try to look for housing in the company of friends. Doing it alone only makes the situation more difficult. Please contact us for advice or support if you need it. We are here to help you!

Student Housing Guide
Finding somewhere to live in Lund takes a lot of time, patience and work. The housing market in Lund can appear extremely complicated with more than 20 independent actors in the student housing market alone.
Lund University Student Unions, through BoPoolen, has therefore created a student housing guide to help you navigate the Lundian housing jungle. We hope to make the difficult easy.

To have as good of a chance as possible to find accommodation in Lund we recommend that you start looking as early as possible. Don’t limit yourself to only searching for somewhere to live in Lund. The distances in southern Sweden are small and there are a number of cities close to Lund from which you can easily commute.

If you haven’t found somewhere to live before the onset of the term, the chances are that you won’t do so later either. Lund University Student Unions does not recommend anyone who has not found accommodation prior to the onset of the semester to come to Lund. Unfortunately, this is what the housing situation in Lund looks like.
